Description

This map, titled “Dominances and Conquests of the Prophet David and Solomon,” shows the political and geographical boundaries of the reigns described in the Old Testament (Torah) that represented the most powerful period of the ancient Kingdom of Israel. The map is a detailed depiction of the status of the Holy Land around the 10th century B.C., including the military campaigns of King David and the expansion of the borders by King Solomon. Geographically, it covers a very wide area, extending from the shores of the Mediterranean Sea (The Great or Uttermost Sea) in the west to the beginning of Mesopotamia in the east; from Antioch and the Taurus Mountains in the north to the Gulf of Aqaba and the Sinai Peninsula in the south. The ancient cities highlighted on the map include Jerusalem, Hebron, Jericho, Bethlehem, Damascus, Tyre, Sidon, Gaza and Petra. In addition, ancient cities of Mesopotamia such as “Ur of the Chaldees” and regions frequently mentioned in sacred texts such as Haran, Racca and the Euphrates River are also detailed. Ancient kingdoms and tribal areas such as Moab, Ammon, Edom, Syria, Zobah, Hamath, Ishtob are demarcated in a way that reflects the political structure of the period. According to the chronology based on the Bible, the kingdom, which was established by David's military campaigns, experienced its most glorious period in terms of wealth, architecture and regional influence during the reign of Solomon. This map should be evaluated not only as a geographical document but also as a visual representation of a religious and historical narrative. The map, which draws attention with its highly detailed topographic drawing, also presents natural elements such as mountain ranges, riverbeds, desert passes and coastal cities with great care. Sacred mountains such as Mount Sinai (Mt. Sinai), Mount Nebo (Mt. Nebo) and Horeb are also positioned, giving them symbolic and theological significance with reference to the prophetic narratives.
