Description

The Tophane Fountain and its surrounding marketplace are among the most important centers reflecting both the architectural and socio-economic life of 18th- and 19th-century Ottoman Istanbul. Built in 1732 by Sultan Mahmud I, this monumental fountain is considered a pinnacle example of the Ottoman Baroque style. The reliefs, floral motifs, calligraphic panels, and Quranic verses and couplets from Turkish, Persian, and Arab scholars that cover its four facades give the fountain not only functional but also aesthetic and symbolic significance. The fountain's jewel-like shimmer when sunlight strikes its marble ornaments further enhances its architectural splendor. The square located in front of the Tophane Fountain formed the heart of Pera, one of the most vibrant commercial centers of the period. This marketplace, displaying products from Üsküdar, the Marmara Islands, and the villages along the Bosphorus, played a central role in Istanbul's food supply.Fragrant piles of melons and watermelons, grapes arranged in pyramids, emerald green citrus fruits, golden yellow pomegranates, pistachios, lemons, quinces, oranges, and apples provided not only commercial products but also a visual feast representing the city's abundance and prosperity. In the background, bazaar stalls and awning-covered shops adorn the market. The crowds here reveal that the marketplace was not only a shopping venue but also a social gathering place. People chatted in small groups, some shopped, and others simply strolled. In the engraving, the mosque and its complex rising in the background, alongside the fountain and market, reinforce the religious, architectural, and social unity of the space. Built in 1826 by architect Krikor Balyan upon the order of Sultan Mahmud II, the Nusretiye (Tophane) Mosque is in perfect visual and functional harmony with the fountain in the square.
