Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon (1707–1788) was a French naturalist, biologist, cosmologist and mathematician. Buffon is considered the father of all thought in natural history in the second half of the 18th century. His ideas influenced generations of naturalists, including Charles Darwin. His major work is "Histoire Naturallle Générale et Particulière", published in 36 volumes between 1749 and 1789. These books, including this engraving, were translated into many languages ​​and brought Buffon great academic recognition and popularity.
