Description

This engraving depicts the presentation of Joseph's blood-soaked shirt to Jacob, as recounted in verse 33 of Genesis, Chapter 37, of the Old Testament. After throwing Joseph into a well and selling him into slavery, Joseph's brothers, in an attempt to deceive their father Jacob, brought him Joseph's special garment, stained with blood. Recognizing the shirt, Jacob believed his son was dead and was deeply grieved. This event symbolized the devastating impact of sin on innocence and was also part of God's mysterious plan, as Joseph's departure to Egypt would ultimately open the door to his family's salvation. The engraving effectively captures a dramatic moment. Jacob, seated in the foreground, gazes helplessly and mournfully at the shirt, powerfully reflecting the anguish of a father's heart. The bent body of Yusuf's brother, who offers him the shirt, conveys the gravity of the event to the audience, and the other brothers in the background, as witnesses to the scene, deepen the tension and complicity.
