Description

These two maps show the military operation areas of the Danube (Balkan) Front and the Caucasus Front on the eastern border during the 1877-1878 Ottoman-Russian War. The Danube Front, which is the Battlefield in Europe, is the Danube River and its surroundings. The countries are Romania, Bulgaria and eastern Serbia. The main cities and positions are Bucharest, Silistre, Ruse, Shumen, Varna, Nicopolis, Pleven, Lovca, Tirnova, Osman Bazar, Vidin, Galatz, Mangalia. This is the region where the most intense land battles between the Ottoman and Russian forces took place. Important battles that determined the course of the war, such as the Siege of Pleven, were located in this map area. The Danube River is of critical importance as a natural border line, and the bridge-building, crossing and siege movements along the river formed the basis of military strategies on this front. The Caucasus Front on the eastern border of Anatolia is Eastern Anatolia and Northern Iran. Erzurum, Kars, Ardahan, Batumi, Tbilisi, Alexandropol (Gyumri), Yerevan, Bayezid, Toprak-Kale, Gyumri, Van, Elizabetpol (Ganja), Tabriz are the main cities and positions. The Erzurum-Kars line is the strongest defense line of the Ottoman Empire in the east. The Russians advanced into Ottoman territory with a large army through the Caucasus and engaged in intense fighting on the Kars and Ardahan line. This front is very challenging in terms of logistics due to both the mountainous terrain and the climatic conditions. The map also shows battle points such as Toprak-Kale, Zivin, Alhas Tepe, Deveboynu, Khorosan.
