Description

This map is an elegant antique print made by John Rapkin in the 1850s, showing the lands of the Ottoman Empire in Europe (Rumelia). Entitled "Turkey in Europe", this work presents detailed geographical information and place names in accordance with the cartographic style of the period. At the same time, the floral border used in the frame reflects the luxurious map production style of the period and shows that this map has not only geographical but also artistic value. A large part of today's Balkan geography — Albania, North Macedonia, Kosovo, Serbia, Bulgaria, southern Romania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Montenegro and northern Greece — is shown as a whole under Ottoman rule. Important Ottoman centers of the period such as Salonika (Saloniki), Monastir (Monastery), Üsküp (Uskup), Üsküdar (Scutari), Sofia, Plovdiv (Philippopolis) and Edirne (Adrianople) are shown in detail on the map. At the same time, strategic settlements and mountain ranges along the Danube River are shown using relief-like shading. In the lower right corner of the map, there is a small inset of the Crete Island (Candia), thus emphasizing the Ottoman dominance over the island.
