Description

Charlemagne (or Karl der Große), (747-800), became the ruler of the Frankish Kingdom in 768 and was declared "Holy Roman Emperor" by Pope Leo III in Rome in 800. The most important figure of the Carolingian dynasty and one of the most influential rulers of medieval Europe. This detailed map showing the borders of the Charlemagne Empire in the 8th century covers a large geographical area in Western Europe: including today's France, Germany, Italy, Belgium, Austria and the Czech Republic. The political borders on the map are colored. The small inset map in the upper right corner of the map shows the borders drawn by the Treaty of Verdun in 843 after the dissolution of Charlemagne's empire. It was divided into 3 main parts: West Francia (ancestor of France), East Francia (ancestor of Germany), Middle Francia / Lotharingia (a short-lived structure covering today's Belgium, Luxembourg, Switzerland and Northern Italy).
