Description

This map, titled "Europaische Türkei I - Turkey in Europe," is a political and geographical map published in German in the 6th edition of Meyers Konversations-Lexikon at the end of the 19th century. It comprehensively depicts the European territories of the Ottoman Empire, namely the organization of provinces and vilayets in the Balkans. The small inset in the upper right corner of the map, titled "Türkisches Reich", shows the general geographical extent of the Ottoman Empire and color-codes the areas of Ottoman rule in North Africa, the Middle East, and Anatolia: the brown line indicates directly dependent Ottoman territories (Unmittelbare Besitzungen), the orange line indicates semi-dependent autonomous regions (Unter autonom verwaltung), and the light red line indicates former Ottoman territories. On the large map (scale 1:3500,000), the regions belonging to the Ottoman provincial administration, such as the Danube Province, Kosovo, Monastir, Thessaloniki, Edirne, Shkodra, and Ioannina, are shown quite clearly. This map, with its high level of geographical detail, depicts rivers, mountain ranges, passes, and port cities using topographic relief. The map also reflects the transportation infrastructure of the period, including railways, major trade routes, and strategic crossing points. The center of Constantinople (Istanbul) is clearly marked, and connections to both the Bosphorus and the Marmara Sea are meticulously illustrated. Furthermore, the lower section of the map includes details of northern and central Greece, providing insight into the Ottoman-Greek border at the time. Meyers Konversations-Lexikon, in which this map was published, was one of the most respected and widely used encyclopedias in Germany, published from 1839 to 1984.
