Description

This map is an original engraving titled “Asia Minor”, produced by Joseph Fullarton & Co. publishing house in Glasgow, Scotland in the mid-19th century, depicting the Anatolian peninsula in detail. This work, which draws attention with its historical, geographical and artistic aspects, is a product of the Western world's perception of Anatolia that has continued since the classical period. The map reflects both the classical and contemporary geography of the region by using the names of ancient cities together with the cities of the Ottoman period. The engraving titled “View of Smyrna” in the lower right corner depicts the Port of Izmir and coastal life during the Ottoman period, thus giving the map the function of a period photograph. Geographically, the map, which shows the Aegean, Mediterranean and Black Sea coasts, central Anatolian plateaus, mountainous regions and rivers in detail, also adds topographic depth with shading techniques. Although it does not directly show ethnic distributions demographically, the cities on the map indicate regions known as the centers of the Ottoman multicultural structure at the time; for example Izmir, Trabzon, Konya, Diyarbakir.
