Gjirokaster Castle, the second largest castle in the Balkans, was surrounded by walls during the Roman Empire. The castle, which was used in the Ottoman period, was expanded in 1811 by Ali Pasha. In the 1900s, it was turned into a dungeon where prisoners were kept.
