Empress Helena, mother of Emperor Constantine the Great, made excavations at the place where the Prophet Jesus was crucified in 375 AD, and ensured that the Holy Cross on which the Prophet Jesus was crucified was found. Empress Helena had a church built in Jerusalem for the hiding of the Holy Cross and the Holy Cross was placed in this church named "Holy Sepulcher / Holy Grave / Resurrection". Pieces of the Holy Cross, which has been worn out over time, have been brought to Hagia Sophia twice. When Hagia Sophia was plundered during the Latin invasion in 1204, the last pieces of the Holy Cross were also lost.
