Description

The Lighthouse of Alexandria was built by the architect Sosttratus of Cnidus on the island of Pharos, which is opposite the port of Alexandria, by the 1st and 2nd kings of the Egyptian Ptolemaic Dynasty, Ptolemy between 285-246 BC. It is the tallest lighthouse ever built with a height of 180 meters. The large bronze mirrors at the top of the Lighthouse of Alexandria reflected the sunlight during the day and the light of the firewood burned in front of the mirrors at night (as can be seen in the Engraving), which guided the ships entering the port, which could be seen from seventy kilometers away. As a result of earthquakes and natural conditions, the lighthouse was completely destroyed in 1500 and the Fortress of Qaitbay was built in its place.
