In the Ottoman Empire, the sultans' journey to a public mosque for Friday prayers on horseback with a certain ceremony and their return from the mosque was called "Friday greeting" or "selamlık resmi". During the Ottoman Empire after the conquest of Istanbul, the Friday greeting was repeated every week and was watched by everyone, local and foreign, Muslim and non-Muslim, and many petitions of complaint and demand were given to the sultan by the citizens along the way.
