Built during the time of Theodosius (5th century AD) and located within the Theodosian land walls, the Edirne Gate (Porta Adrianapolis or Saint Ioannes Gate) is the gate through which Fatih Sultan Mehmed entered the city on horseback with Akşemseddin at the head of his army on Friday morning, three days after the conquest of Istanbul. The engraving also includes the Mihrimah Sultan Mosque, built by Mimar Sinan on the orders of Mihrimah Sultan, the daughter of Suleiman the Magnificent. In addition, it is highly probable that the moat in front of the walls and gate is the Likos Stream (Bayrampaşa Stream or Yenibahçe Stream).
