Janissaries are a military class in the Ottoman Empire. The creation of Janissary Hearths is based on the periods of Orhan Gazi or I. Murad. The Janissaries were created by raising (devshirme) Christian children aged 8-18. Janissaries used to stay around the sultan and protect him while he was going on a campaign. Janissaries used to protect Istanbul in peacetime. The Janissary Chamber was abolished by Mahmud II in 1826. The Janissary Corps is the first modern permanent army in the world.
