Sultan Abdulaziz was dethroned with the coup of May 30, 1876. He was found dead with his wrists cut on June 4, 1876 in Feriye Palace where he was detained. Feriye Palace or Feriye Palaces are located between Beşiktaş district and Ortaköy district on the shores of the Bosphorus. Feriye palaces were added later because the Dolmabahçe Palace and then the Çırağan Palace were inadequate for the Ottoman dynasties. These buildings, built by architects who are members of the Balyan family, are called Feriye Palaces, meaning secondary buildings or auxiliary buildings. Palaces are used by various institutions for educational purposes today (Ex. Kabatas High School). The Great Mecidiye Mosque, or Ortakoy Mosque as it is known by the people, was built by Sultan Abdulmecid in 1853 by the architect Nigogos Balyan. The mosque, which is a very elegant structure, is in Baroque style.
