Golden Gate (Gilded Gate) is located in the part of the city walls of Istanbul close to the Sea of Marmara. It was built by the Byzantine Emperor Theodosius I in 390 as a triumphal arch at the head of the road leading to the imperial palace. It is known as the Golden Gate because of the gold gilding on the wings when the door was built. It was badly damaged in the earthquakes that took place in Istanbul between 740 and 1894.
