The Siege of Sevastopol lasted from October 1854 to September 1855 and was one of the longest and bloodiest phases of the Crimean War. The siege was a joint operation by the British, French, Ottoman and Sardinian allies aimed at capturing the city of Sevastopol, the center of Russian naval power in the Black Sea. During this long siege, the sides engaged in small-scale attacks, trench raids and repulse engagements, especially at night. The engraving depicts one such night trench warfare. This scene shows the Allies successfully repelling a sudden attack by the Russians at night.
