Description

This dramatic engraving depicts the heroic defense of a small artillery position by the British Guards during the Battle of Inkerman, one of the bloodiest and most chaotic battles of the Crimean War. The Battle of Inkerman took place on November 5, 1854, on the Inkerman hills northeast of Sevastopol, between the Russian Empire and the Allied forces of Britain, France, and the Ottoman Empire. The battle was a major offensive launched by the Russians on a foggy morning during the Siege of Sevastopol in order to break the siege and defeat the Allies by surprise. The Russians suffered heavy losses in this attack (approximately 10,000 dead and wounded), which transferred the strategic initiative in the Siege of Sevastopol to the Allies. This battle is sometimes referred to as the "Battle of the Officers" or "Battle of the Soldiers" because it was won on irregular terrain, in thick fog, and by the courage of small units. In the foreground of the engraving, the British Guards are in a determined defensive line around two artillery batteries, and the men are engaged in hand-to-hand combat with their rifles fixed with bayonets. Soldiers lying on the ground show traces of intense fighting and casualties. With the intensity of the battle, the smoke of the cannon fire, bayonet charges and scenes of close combat, it is one of the rare engravings that visualizes the most decisive moments of the Crimean War from a historical, artistic and cultural perspective.
