In the autumn of 1855, Ömer Lütfi Pasha landed in Sokhum with 30,000 soldiers in order to bring aid and reinforcements to Kars under siege and to the eastern front. On 6 November 1855, he defeated the Russian army under the command of General Bagratian on the banks of the Ingur River. The Ingur River is the river that marks the border between Georgia and Abkhazia. This dramatic engraving depicts the Ottoman army under the command of Ömer Pasha crossing the Ingur River during the Battle of Ingur. In the engraving, Ömer Pasha is shown riding a horse in the middle of the river. The Turkish soldiers entered the water in a disciplined manner, advancing with rifles and bayonets in their hands with the determination to fight.
