In order to help Kars under siege and the eastern front, and to relieve the Russian pressure in the Caucasus, the Ottoman Army launched the Caucasus Campaign in the autumn of 1855 with a force of 30,000 men under the command of Ömer Pasha. During this campaign, Ottoman troops entered the Abkhazia and Megrel regions, crossed the Ingur River and advanced towards the interior. The engraving shows a part of Ömer Pasha's camp on the eastern shore of the Black Sea during this campaign. In the center of the engraving rises a medieval castle with a flag raised. This could possibly be Redout Kale or Sohumkale. The Ottoman army set up dozens of tents in a large area near the castle. A military settlement is seen spread out in the valleys at the foot of the mountains.
