Description

This engraving depicts a key scene during the Crimean War (1853-1856) when Ottoman soldiers landed on the Crimean peninsula. Yenikale is a historic Ottoman fortress on the shores of the Kerch Strait, which connects the Sea of Azov to the Black Sea, in what is now Ukraine. It was built by the Ottomans in 1706. During the Crimean War, the Ottoman army, together with its British and French allies, landed troops at various strategic points along the Black Sea coast in order to land in Crimea. Yenikale was used as an important transit point in this context. In the engraving, large Ottoman troops are being brought ashore in rowboats. Horses and gun carriages are also part of this landing operation. Officers and soldiers are depicted in detail, some of whom are seen getting off their boats. The Yenikale Fortress is a structure on a high hill in the background.
