The Basilica (Yerebatan) Cistern, located in the Sultanahmet district and built by the Byzantine Emperor Justinianus in 532, was the largest water reservoir in Istanbul during its period. The cistern is a giant structure covering a rectangular area of 70 m in length and 140 m in width. There are 336 columns, 9 meters high, at 4.80 meters apart in the cistern.
