In 1452, during the siege of Istanbul, Kilitbahir (Lock of the Sea) Castle was built by Sultan Mehmet the Conqueror in the narrowest part of the Dardanelles in order to prevent the Papal Navy from helping the Byzantine Empire. Sultaniye (Cimenlik) Castle was built in 1463, just opposite Kilitbahir Castle.
