Description

Kuleli Barracks (Military High School) Building is located on the Anatolian side of the Bosphorus between Çengelköy and Vaniköy. It was built as a masonry barracks by Sultan Mahmud II in 1828. The building, which was completely burned in 1844, was rebuilt in 1847 as half-timbered, half-masonry, and a hospital was built next to it. Kuleli Barracks and Hospital were used by French and British soldiers in the Crimean War between 1853-1856. At the end of the war, the allied soldiers deliberately burned the barracks while leaving the city. The barracks were rebuilt by Sultan Abdulaziz in 1871. The building that exists today is the barracks built by Sultan Abdulaziz. It is called Kuleli Barracks because there are towers on both sides.
