The tomb of Ebu Eyyub el-Ansari, who served as a flag-bearer during the Umayyad campaign to Constantinople (Istanbul) in the 7th century and was martyred in front of the walls of Istanbul, is in Eyüp. Eyüp Cemetery was formed due to the people's desire to be buried close to the tomb. Because of this tomb, the cemetery was named Eyüp.
