Hagia Sophia was built by the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I in 537 as a church on the historical peninsula of Istanbul. After Istanbul was conquered by the Ottomans in 1453, it was converted into a mosque by Fatih Sultan Mehmet. It was used as a museum between 1935-2020, and it has been used as a mosque again since 2020.
