Kelenderis Antique City is located in Aydincik district of Mersin. According to ancient sources, the city was founded by Sandon, one of the oldest ancient gods of Cilicia. Hittites, Assyrians, Samos, Seleucids, Egyptians, Romans, Byzantines, Umayyads, Armenians, Karamanids and Ottomans dominated as a port and trade city. There are very few ruins left from the city, which has been inhabited since the day it was founded. Harbor walls, harbor bath, amphitheater, cisterns in various parts of the city and canals carrying water to these cisterns are some of the surviving structures. The Susanlik Castle (Liman-Harbor Castle), depicted in the engraving, surrounds the peninsula in the south of the city, and the walls and some ruins of the castle can be seen today. The castle is clearly drawn on the map of Piri Reis.
