The Gulek Pass, which means beautiful passage, and known as the "Cilicia Gate" in ancient times, is the only and important passage connecting South-North or North-South on the Taurus Mountains. In Hittite mythology, it is said that this passage was opened with the horns of a bull in order to allow the Hittites to advance towards the sea. After the Roman Septimus Severus defeated Pescenio Nigro in Issos in 194, a triumphal arch was built on the Cilician Gate. A quadriga (four-horse chariot) monument was placed on the triumphal arch. Therefore, games under the name of "Severa Olympia Epineikia" started to be organized in Cilicia every five years.
