The ancient city of Sardis is located near the town of Sart in the Salihli district of Manisa. The Ancient City was the capital of the Lydian Kingdom, which ruled between 1200-546 BC. The city remained under the domination of Lydians, Persians, Pergamon Kingdom, Rome and Eastern Rome respectively in history. In the ancient city of Sardis, where the money was first minted, there was the largest defense wall after Mesopotamia. Among the ruins of Sardes Ancient City are a monumental Hammam-Gymnasion (Bath and Sports Center) Complex, Temple of Artemis, Synagogue, Church, Gold Refining Workshops, Agora (Bazaar) and Acropolis (Upper Campus). One of the first seven churches in Anatolia was built here behind the Temple of Artemis. According to the New Testament in the second part of the Bible, the Prophet Jesus appears to Saint (Apostle) John and gives "messages" to be delivered to the seven churches. Messages sent to these seven churches themselves, and are regarded as the first Christian churches in Turkey are located. M.S. Established by Saint (from Tarsus) Paul during the Roman Empire in 53-56, these churches are named after the Roman period: 1.Ephesus (Ephesos) (Selçuk) 2.İzmir (Smyrna) 3.Bergama (Pergamon) 4.Salihli ( Sardes) 5.Alaşehir (Philadelphia) 6.Denizli (Laodikeia) 7.Akhisar (Thyateira). One of these seven churches mentioned in the Bible and founded by St. Paul was built behind the Temple of Artemis in the Ancient City of Sardis.
