Pergamon (Bergama) ancient city is located in Bergama district of İzmir province. The history of Bergama, one of the most magnificent settlements of the Hellenistic Period, goes back to the seventh century BC. The city was the capital of the Kingdom of Pergamon, which lasted for about 150 years between 281-133 BC. The city was built on terraces on a place known as "Castle Hill". Altar of Zeus, Dionysos Temple, Temple of Athena, Temple of Demeter, the famous Pergamon Library consisting of 200,000 books, theater, gymnasium, royal palaces, Traian Temple, waterways, fountains, cisterns and arsenals are world-famous monuments built on the Castle Hill. The Three Arched Bridge on the Bergama (Selinus) Stream passing through Bergama was built in the Roman period in the II or III century AD.
