Description

Hierapolis ancient city is located near Pamukkale (Denizli). Pamukkale has been a center of attraction throughout history due to its healing thermal waters, white travertines and terrace-shaped pools. The city was founded by the Kingdom of Pergamum in the early 2nd century BC. It suffered greatly from the earthquake during the Roman Empire and was completely renovated by the Roman Emperor Neron. Hierapolis became a very important religious center in the Byzantine period after the Roman period. St. Philip, one of the apostles of Jesus, was killed here in 80 AD and his tomb is here. For this reason, the City has become one of the pilgrimage centers of Christians since the 4th century AD. The city was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1988 as a natural and cultural heritage.
