The name of Aydın City in Antiquity is Tralles. The city was named Guzelhisar after it was captured by the Turks in the 13th century. During the Ottoman Empire, the city was named Guzelhisar-i Aydın or Aydın Guzelhisari, which means Guzelhisar in the Aydın County (Sancak), in order to distinguish it from Guzelhisar in the north of Menemen. At the end of the XIX century, the name Güzelhisar was forgotten and only Aydın was used.
