This engraving captures the social diversity and daily life of Istanbul in the last quarter of the 19th century through the eyes of a Western observer. It depicts diverse social, religious, and professional groups. These include a vendor selling baskets and brooms, a member of the Jewish community, porters carrying people in litters, a porter carrying heavy loads, a night watchman, a chestnut seller, Ottoman women, a dervish, and a "softa," meaning "medrese student." This diversity demonstrates the Ottoman capital's cosmopolitan nature and vibrant street life. While this engraving aims to introduce daily life in Istanbul to the European public just before the 93 War, it is also a product of the curiosity and exotic perception of Ottoman society in the West.
