The engraving depicts the surviving sections of the ancient fortification walls and towers of Antioch (modern Antakya). These remains belong to a complex defensive system originally developed during the Hellenistic and Roman periods and later strengthened in the Byzantine era. The rugged mountainous topography visible in the background corresponds to the strategic landscape surrounding Antioch, which enhanced its defensive capabilities. By the 19th century, many walls had fallen into ruin due to earthquakes, warfare, and natural erosion.
