Description

This engraving depicts the ruins traditionally identified as the “Iron Gate” of Antioch, an ancient fortified entrance on the mountainous routes surrounding the city. The structure belonged to Antioch’s extensive defensive system, which protected one of the most important urban centers of the Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine Near East. The rugged topography seen in the engraving highlights the strategic position of these passages controlling access between the Orontes valley and the interior highlands.
