Description

This engraving, published in the May 12, 1877, issue of The Illustrated London News, depicts a Russian field artillery battery positioned at the strategic point where the Prut River meets the Danube during the Russo-Turkish War (1877-1878). This location held a critical position for the Russian army's preparations for crossing the Danube and for monitoring all Ottoman movements in the region. The image shows temporary artillery trenches constructed of earth and logs overlooking the riverbank. Russian soldiers are depicted in these trenches both in a position of waiting and ready to fire. Such positions are characteristic of the temporary defensive lines frequently used on the Danube front. The point where the Prut River flows into the Danube, near Galaţi (Galatz), was a critical logistical gateway for the Russian army. Taking control of this point made it possible to monitor Ottoman commercial and military movements on the Danube, to detect a possible Ottoman counter-attack early, and to prepare for the Russian army to cross the Danube safely.
