Description

This engraving depicts one of the most critical political transformations in the Ottoman Empire at the end of the 19th century: the dismissal and exile of Grand Vizier Midhat Pasha, followed by the appointment of Edhem Pasha in his place, and the arrival of new soldiers to maintain order and maintain security around the Sublime Porte. The engraving depicts Ottoman soldiers assigned to ensure street security amidst this political turmoil. The soldiers are lined up with their rifles fixed with bayonets, and among the crowd is a mixed crowd of Greek, Armenian, Turkish, and European figures. Veiled women, porters, street vendors, and curious onlookers provide a vibrant panorama of the multicultural Istanbul of the period. In the background is a view of the Sublime Porte and the Sarayburnu area, where thousands of people gathered during Midhat Pasha's exile. The engraving reflects both military vigilance and the social anxiety created by the regime change.
