This engraving is based on paintings by Jean-Baptiste Vanmour (1671-1737). Kazasker or kadıasker are judges who give decisions according to the provisions of sharia in the Ottoman Empire (sharia cases). They had duties such as appointing judges, lecturers and religious officials, overturning or changing the decisions of the judges and creating new decisions. Kazaskers were natural members of the Imperial Council. The kazasker who was in charge of the Rumelian judges was called the Rumelian kazasker, and the one in charge of the Anatolian judges was called the Anatolian kazasker.
