Assos Ancient City is located in Behramkale Village, approximately 17 km south of Ayvacik district of Canakkale. It was founded on the summit and slopes of a volcanic hill, opposite the island of Lesbos, at the southern end of the region called Troas in ancient times. Throughout history, the region, which was under the rule of Lydia, Persia, Pergamon, Rome, was abandoned in the Middle Ages. The Temple of Athena, built in 540 BC, is located at the highest point of the ancient city. The temple was dedicated to the Goddess Athena, the daughter of Zeus, the protector of the city and one of the 12 Olympian Gods. The temple, which was the first and only Doric order in Anatolia in the Archaic Age, was built using andesite stone and has two sections: the front room surrounded by rows of columns and the sacred room. Many historical artifacts, including the statue of the goddess Athena found in the sacred room, were taken to the USA as a result of excavations carried out in the 1800s.
