Assos Ancient City is located in Behramkale Village, approximately 17 km south of Ayvacik district of Canakkale. It was founded on the summit and slopes of a volcanic hill, opposite the island of Lesbos, at the southern end of the region called Troas in ancient times. Throughout history, the region, which was under the rule of Lydia, Persia, Pergamon, Rome, was abandoned in the Middle Ages. The ancient city is surrounded by 3200 meters long walls built in the 4th century BC. There are two main gates, west and east, providing entrance and exit to the city. The engraving depicts the west gate and the 14-meter-high towers on either side of the gate that protect it. These towers still stand today, close to their original state.
