Description

The Temple of Apollo in the Ancient City of Didyma in the Didim district of Aydın is the third largest temple in the world after the Temple of Artemis and the Temple of Heraion. Built in the 6th century BC, the temple was converted into the Church of St. Michael in the 5th century AD and was completely destroyed except for 3 columns as a result of the great earthquake that occurred in the Aegean region in 1493. Built as a replica of the Temple of Artemis in Ephesus, which was built in the name of Apollo's twin sister, the temple was attributed to Apollo, the god of music, art and wisdom, and was the second most important oracle center and sacred place after Delphi during its time.
