Description

The Temple of Aphrodite is located in the ancient city of Aphrodisias, which was founded as a Carian city 12 km southeast of the Karacasu district of Aydın. It is an Ionic temple made entirely of marble with fourteen columns built in the Hellenistic style by the architect Hermogenes in the name of the goddess Aphrodite. The temple was converted into a church in the 5th century AD and the name of the ancient city was changed to Stavropolis. Most of the outer walls of the temple and its apse have survived to the present day.
