Description

Labranda (Labraunda) is an ancient settlement from the Carian period, located on the southern slopes of Latmos Hill in the Milas (ancient capital of Caria, Mylasa) district of Muğla. The name of the place comes from the Labrandan Zeus who carried the double axe, or labrys. The Temple of Zeus Labraundos was built by the Carian King Mausolus in the ancient city of Labranda in the 4th century BC. During the period, the temple became the most important sacred place for the Carians as a place of pilgrimage.
