Description

Hagia Sofia church, which is used as a museum today, is located at the west entrance of Trabzon and on a terrace quite high above the road level. The church was built by Manuel Komnenos, the King of the Komnenos dynasty, between 1204-1263 A.D. The church was converted into a mosque in 1584 after the conquest of Trabzon by the Ottoman Empire, and was used as an arsenal and military hospital during the Russian occupation in 1916. It has been opened to the public as a museum since 1964.
