This famous Claude Lorrain painting is based on a story from Publius Ovidius Naso's poem Metamorphoses. Procris is killed by her husband, the hunter Cephalus, in an unfortunate hunting accident. Diana, the virgin goddess of the hunt, brings Procris back to life and reunites the couple. In the painting, Diana stands between the hunter Cephalus and his wife Procris, and Procris gives her husband a spear carried by a servant boy and a magical dog.
