Andrew Marvell was elected a member of Parliament for Hull in the reign of Charles II. His opposition to the profligacy and corruption of the court and administration was so strong and determined that an attempt was made by the Government to bring him over, by means of bribery, to it side. In this engraving, we see the Lord Treasurer Danby, sent by the King, with a particular message from himself, and to request his acceptance of a thousand guineas.
