Laurence Delvaux (1695–1778) was a key figure who brought together early eighteenth-century English sculpture and the classicist style of Continental Europe. In the engraving, the artist’s hand resting on a classical bust is a deliberate iconographic device symbolizing his command of the history of sculpture. The softly modulated lines used in the modelling of the eyes and face evoke the refinement Delvaux sought to achieve on marble surfaces.
