Description

Ann Killigrew (1660–1685) is one of the few women of the Restoration period known both as a poet and a painter. The composition in this print is based on the only known pictorial representations of Killigrew and recalls the artistic and literary production of women at a time when their visibility was severely limited. The handling of line on the printing surface (especially the dense hatching used in the curls of her hair) reflects the characteristic aesthetic of eighteenth-century portrait engraving.
