This engraving was produced after the death of the English painter John Greenhill (1644-1676) and reflects the portrait tradition of the Restoration period. The portrait was created to commemorate Greenhill, who died at a young age. A pupil of Sir Peter Lely, Greenhill adopted the elegant and restrained aesthetic characteristic of Restoration portraiture. Both John Baptist Gaspars (Jaspers) (d. 1691), a painter of portraits and tapestries, and John Greenhill were students of Sir Peter Lely
